Photo essay: Newlyn Harbour

A brightly coloured fishing trawler chugs out of Newlyn Harbour under an impossibly blue summer sky.

It’s a typically idyllic Cornish scene, but as I walk along the quay many of the boats have a little bit more rust than seems healthy… grass grows out of the redundant nets on a trawler’s deck. Further along the quay an abandoned trawler lists, propped drunkenly against the dock. Its days at sea are over.

I have little knowledge of the economics of fishing, no idea if this is just the natural ebb and flow of the fishing industry, or a result of falling fishing stocks and foreign competition. I just like wandering round harbours…

    Super pics. each one illustrated your words to describe the decline of the harbour.The boat leaving the harbour and all the following photos showed so vividly the sad end of many others.
